Casting Thor’s hammer pendants

The process of casting a Thor’s hammer or Mjölnir pendant, demonstrated at a Vikings of Middle England event at Polesworth Abbey in July 2025.

The soapstone mould, made by Helg Reproductions aims to faithfully cast a copy of an original hammer from Skotrøa, Norway. The hammer would be cast in silver (we used pewter for the demonstration for cost!), then finished by drawing material out with a light hammer to form the full hammer shape and a shank, before punching or engraving ring-and-dot docatoration onto the surface.

This is just one of the Viking jewellery making processes that our smith demonstrates. Pop along to one of our events to see other crafts like wire knit, mould making and lost wax casting.
